Le Bugue

Surrounded by wooded hills, Le Bugue is built on the banks of the river Vézère. The welcoming little town with nearly 3000 inhabitants dominates the southern entrance of the Vézère valley, which is world famous for its prehistoric sites. With its situation Le Bugue offers lots of different choices to the holiday maker: for the sportive (canoeing, cycling, walking, horseriding, tennis), a choice of good inexpensive restaurants, interesting sites to visit and good facilities for everyday needs.

Market day in Le Bugue is Tuesday when the main street in the town comes alive with the odours and vibrant colours of the local produce that is on display, there is also a small market on Saturday.

Le Bugue is the home to several different sites:
Aquarium du Perigord noir - which is the largest private fresh water aquarium in Europe - you will see more than 6000 fish from our rivers and also tropical fish.
Village du Bournat - a living replica of a 19th century French village. Local craftsmen demonstrate the dying arts of the blacksmith, tanner, basketweaver, miller, baker...... You will a find farm with its ancient tools and implements, a school house, the church, windmill and for the children a fun fair from "1900" where all the games are free!
Grotte de Bra-Bahau - prehistoric engravings.
Gouffre de Proumeyssac - described as the "crystal cathedral". Is a cavern almost 50m high, the density and variety of the crystallisations make this a fine geological specimen.
